The return of the NSX.

Once at the forefront of sports cars and innovative technology, Honda and Acura have since become stale, producing automobiles that don’t have the passion that was once a hallmark of the Japanese automaker. At the 2012 North American International Auto Show, Honda/Acura is looking to regain its cult-like following with the reintroduction of a classic – the NSX.

The new Acura NSX Hybrid Concept car promises to be every bit as innovative as the original NSX super car was back in the ‘90s. Powering the Acura NSX Concept is a next-generation V-TEC V-6 engine featuring direct injection, mated to a dual-clutch gearbox with integrated electric motor. The mid-mounted engine will also utilize a 2 Electric Motor Drive Unit with bilateral torque adjustable control system. The advanced system can send positive or negative torque to the front wheels during cornering for better control and handling dynamics.

One of the most technologically advanced features on the new Acura NSX Hybrid Concept is the Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system. The new system utilizes new electric motors and power generated by the next-generation V-6 engine to provide precise and responsive handling dynamics to all four wheels with superior efficiency.

“This Sport Hybrid SH-AWD system will make NSX the ultimate expression of Acura’s idea to create synergy between man and machine,” said Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda Motor Co., Ltd. “The NSX will make the driver one with the car to enhance dynamic driving abilities without getting in the way.”

Acura’s goal for the NSX Concept was to stick with the car’s original formula of a high power-to-weight ratio when it was first developed back in the early ‘90s. Lightweight materials and construction methods will be used to keep weight to a minimum for the production model. Instead of a big engine, Honda/Acura also chose to use a smaller V-6 engine with efficient hybrid technology to achieve maximum performance without affecting the NSX’s overall weight.

Acura expects to debut a production version of the NSX Concept within the next three years. The official Acura NSX specifications and pricing details have not been released by the Japanese automaker. Acura did confirm that a majority of the research along with complete production will be carried out at their state-of-the-art Ohio facility in the United States.
