The latest addition to the legendary RS stable at Audi.
Possibly the most exciting model from Audi since the R8, the RS5 blends the power of a high-revving V8 with a sleek, sexy design. Power and beauty emanate from the RS5, with a bold single frame grille and broad air intakes that sit atop a contrasting splitter. LED daytime running lights give the Audi RS5 stunning road presence. Flared fenders create a muscular physique, reminiscent of the historic Audi Quattro. Classic matte aluminum side mirrors further distinguish the RS5, and together with the trim strips on the grille and windows, give the coupé a classy appearance. The RS5 bears its muscle through the large twin oval tailpipes flanking the rear diffuser. A trunk spoiler rises at a speed of 75 mph, and retracts at 50 mph for increased stability. Underneath the RS5 is a clad underbody with integrated air vents for the brakes and transmission. At high speeds, the underbody creates downforce to further aid stability. As an option, Audi offers a Carbon design package for the exterior and engine compartment, as well as black or matte aluminum styling packages.
An uncompromising 4.2-liter V-8 with an almost boundless rev limit screams through the dual exhaust, sending the Audi RS5 to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The 4.2-liter features FSI direct fuel injection and four adjustable camshafts, along with a dual-branch intake and exhaust system for a stout powerband. All 444 horses are unleashed at 8,250 RPM, while the peak torque of 317 lb-ft is available on a plateau from 4,000 – 6,000 RPM. Top speed for the 3,803 lb. coupé is electronically limited to 155 mph, which can be optionally removed by Audi for a top speed 174 mph.
Power is harnessed through the reinforced seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, and sent to all four wheels via Audi’s famous Quattro permanent all-wheel drive system. The self-locking crown-gear center differential gives the RS5 a standard 40:60 rear-biased configuration, but allows for up to 70 percent of torque to reach the front or as much as 85 percent to reach the rear if necessary. In conjunction with the center differential, the Audi RS5 uses electronic torque vectoring to decrease wheel spin at the car’s limits. For increased handling the sport differential can be placed at the rear of the car as an option.
New springs, shock absorbers, and anti-roll bars lower the RS5 by 0.8 inches for a better center of gravity. Three different wheels are available with sizes ranging from the standard 19-inch five-arm design with 265/35 tires, to the optional 20-inch wheels shod in 275/30 tires. Winter wheels are available that combined with Quattro provide an entertaining winter driving experience. Peering through the wheels are powerful aluminum high-gloss black eight-piston brake calipers that flaunt the RS5 logo. Measuring 14.37 inches in diameter at the front, the internally vented discs feature perforated steel piston rings to dissipate heat. Optionally 15-inch diameter ceramic carbon-fiber discs are available, and provide relentless stopping power.
The power and performance of the graceful coupé continues in the interior. Electronically adjustable Alcantara and leather sport seats are standard and provide superb lateral support. Additionally, sporty bucket seats and luxury climate-controlled comfort seats are available, and can be ordered with special leathers and colors. The sporty character shines through the carbon fiber inlays and aluminum look pedals, footrests, and MMI controls. The instrument panel is dressed in a dark piano finish, complimenting the black gauges with white lettering. Audi RS5 logos adorn interior pieces such as the perforated leather steering wheel and gearshifter. Audi also offers decorative inlays in brushed aluminum, stainless steel mesh-look, or black piano finish.
The Audi RS5 will make its debut at the 2010 Geneva International Motor Show. Sales will begin in spring of 2010, with prices starting at € 77,000 (+/- $105,000 USD).
