Now we just have to wait one more year…
When the McLaren F1 was introduced in 1992, it was the most advanced super car in the world. Only 107 total models were built between racing, prototypes, and street use, with one of those being a single road car body shell. It was the pinnacle of engineering and driving performance, and still is looked at as one of the greatest cars ever built in the automotive world.
After the Mercedes-Benz SLR, the McLaren name started to fade away until the new MP4-12C super car was unveiled with its sights set on vastly increasing the business for the British Automaker. The new MP4-12C was quite a technological achievement, but still left enthusiasts wondering if there was a successor to the legendary F1 in the pipeline.
And now the wait is finally over; the British automaker has released a preview of the McLaren P1 design concept that is set to make its public debut at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. The new McLaren P1 is the design study that will translate to the production model, which is to be revealed and put into production in 12 months time.
The new McLaren P1 will carry on the tradition that the F1 started, with incredibly advanced technology leading to industry-leading performance and unmatched driving dynamics. The storied history of McLaren’s racing will be poured into the new P1 hyper car to produce an end product that will be the most rewarding and dynamic car available on the market. Mind-blowing top speed figures aren’t the focus for the British automaker, rather the complete performance driving package that echoes the history, tradition, and engineering that McLaren is known for worldwide, and was once seen in the McLaren F1.
‘The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.’
‘Our aim is not necessarily to be the fastest in absolute top speed but to be the quickest and most rewarding series production road car on a circuit,’ said Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive Managing Director. ‘It is the true test of a supercar’s all round ability and a much more important technical statement. Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made.’
The new McLaren P1 will sit atop the MP4-12C model range in terms of price and performance with production beginning within the next 12 months.
