The secret hybrid-electric Porsche Concept in Paris.
At the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Porsche was hinting at a new unveiling in their press releases, but wouldn’t say what exactly it was. Well, they’ve officially unveiled it and it looks as if a new Porsche 991 911 and a 958-generation Cayenne got a little too friendly and had a child.
Called the Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept, it’s a glimpse into what we can expect from the next-generation Panamera and other Porsche models. The new Concept features an advanced hybrid drive system that can be charged via a household outlet and all new interior and communication systems that will make their way into the lineup in the years to come.
The new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo features a new headlight design with a four-pack of LEDs and new C-Blade lights integrated into the air inlets inside the bumper. The fascia is similar to its SUV sibling and current-generation Panamera that swoops towards the rear with sculpted lines. The rear incorporates the slim LED taillight-style that is found with the 991-generation 911s incorporated to a hatchback with roof spoiler and lower diffuser. Instead of traditional side mirrors, Porsche has designed a system with two cameras in the side air outlets that display real-time video in the cockpit.
The Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept is combines sporty features such as short overhangs and muscular lines with a large trunk and generous interior space to provide owners with a superb balance of performance and practicality. The entire Concept car was covered in a new Liquid Metal Blue paint and wears acid green Porsche badging and brake calipers throughout the exterior to showcase the “green” hybrid technology. Newly designed dual-spoke wheels emphasize the modern technology utilized by the Concept car.
Underneath the electrochromatic glass trunk floor sits an advanced lithium-ion battery that is more powerful than the nickel-hydride batteries used today. The battery is part of the next-generation Porsche Hybrid system that can be charged via a universal (AC) household outlet in as little as 2.5 hours. The lithium-ion battery is approximately the same size as a traditional battery and has 9.4 Kilowatt-hours of energy storage.
The new “e-hybrid” system is the next-generation of the parallel hybrid system featured in the Cayenne and Panamera Hybrid models and boasts about 416 horsepower (306 kW) of peak power and can operate in pure electric mode up until 130 km/h (81 mph) for as long as 30 km. Fuel consumption is rated at 3.5 liters per 100 km using the NEDC standard and emits under 82 g/km of CO2. The electric motors work with the 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 engine to achieve a 0-62 mph acceleration time of less than six seconds.
The interior sticks to Porsche’s overall principal of “as little as possible but as much as necessary.” Facing the driver is a new TFT color display that shows both camera views in the side mirror system, and other relevant information that the driver can cycle through. The cockpit features a high-rising center console that utilizes new touch technology that can be easily operated by the driver. Three “smart keys” allow for different driving modes that can alter the performance and fun of driving the Panamera Sport Turismo. New communication technology is also incorporated into the Concept, the basis of which is a smart phone app. The app can have pre-programmed specifications for the interior such as air temperature, seat position, etc. for the driver. The smart phone app also can show the charge rate, time left, and preset timing.
The new Porsche Panamera Sport Turismo Concept features a wide range of new technology that will trickle down into future models from the German automaker. It also showcases the possible next-generation design of the Panamera model.
