Maserati Shows Off its Upcoming Ghibli Sedan

An individual statement among luxury sedans.

The Maserati Ghibli is coming back! No, not that the grand touring model from the late-60s, early-70s, nor the model from the 1990s that had the highest-ever output per liter of displacement of any street-legal car during its time. The Ghibli is being revived as a sedan that’s aiming to steal away a few customers from the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5-Series, Audi A6, and the like with its promises of greater sport, luxury, and an individual character.

The Maserati Ghibli will be smaller than the Quattroporte and be based on the new E-Segment chassis from FIAT. Classified as a “sports executive sedan”, the new Ghibli will offer a more athletic ride and greater power than its bigger sibling while still providing a comfortable and luxurious atmosphere. The classic Maserati styling with the three-point trident badge positioned in the front grille, the fender exhaust ports, and rounded figure will seduce buyers in the midsize luxury segment.

Powering the new Maserati Ghibli will be a pair of turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 engines and – for the first time ever – a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 engine will also be offered. The platform is designed for rear-wheel drive, but will also be capable of using the new Maserati “Q4” all-wheel drive system. Each engine will be paired up with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Maserati is expecting to sell approximately 50,000 cars per year in the future, with the Ghibli playing a large role in that figure. The new sports executive sedan will make its debut at the 2013 Shanghai Motor Show at the end of April and official details and specifications will be released then.
