This car is seriously fast. Seriously.
The McLaren P1 is one of the latest hypercars to ride the hybrid wave. It’s helping to usher in a new way of performance motoring alongside the Ferrari LaFerrari and Porsche 918 Spyder. While its two competitors are still having all of their kinks worked out, the first P1 has been delivered to its lucky owner and its outrageous performance figures have been confirmed.
We all knew that the McLaren P1 was going to be fast. Heck, the McLaren team even said that its main goal for the car was to create “the best driver’s car on the road and track.” Speed, low weight, and athleticism are all characteristics that will help reach that goal, and the new P1 has it in spades.

A mid-mounted, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine paired up with an electric drive system produces a whopping 903 bhp and 664 lb-ft. of torque, while still returning 34 mpg on the EU combined cycle and CO2 emissions of 194 g/km. The McLaren P1 can also operate solely on electric power for 11 km (6.8 miles) with no emissions.
But the performance figures for the McLaren P1 arguably overshadow its electrically-charged power output. The sprint from 0-62 mph takes just 2.8 seconds, 124 mph comes in 6.8 ticks of the clock, and the needle hits 186 mph in only 16.5 seconds – 5.5 seconds faster than the McLaren F1. A standard quarter-mile run becomes a display of pure power with the P1 achieving a 9.8-second run at 152 mph. Top speed is electronically limited to 217 mph.
Even the stopping figures are impressive. The lightweight exotic utilizes a bespoke Akebono braking system with carbon ceramic discs coated in silicon carbide, while special Pirelli tires stick to the asphalt. This enables the McLaren P1 to come to a halt from 62 mph in just 99 feet, while stopping from 186-0 mph takes an impressive 806 feet.
As part of the confirmation of performance, the first McLaren P1 was delivered to its new owner at the McLaren Technology Center. The bright Volcano Yellow P1 with contrasting carbon fiber was delivered in September as part of the 50th anniversary celebration. The car is the first of 375 examples that will be made at the McLaren Production Center in Woking, England. Each car will be hand built by 82 technicians in a four-stage process that takes 17 days to complete. One the factory is at full capacity, one car will be completed each day, until the end of the production cycle in mid-2015.
