In the realm of high-performance automobiles, entry doesn’t come cheap. Porsche will give you all the performance you need in 911 Turbo for about $150,000. A bargain basement Ferrari California edges at $200,000. A little Lambo (Hurrican) will be roughly a $40,000 premium over that. A nice 650S fresh out of the McLaren factory will require an additional $20,000 over the Lamborghini. Please be reminded, these are just the “entry level“ cars. The bigger brothers (918, Aventador, LaFerrari, and P1, respectively) get all the press and require you to pony up far more Franklins than we feel comfortable discussing here.
Somehow, Chevrolet has managed to cram in tons of performance yet squeeze out tens of thousands in price for the 2015 Corvette Z06. The price: $78,995 for this bargain basement hellion with 650 ponies, massive 335-series rear tires wrapped around 20×12-inch wheels, huge brakes to match, and a supercharged V8.
Opting for the hard-core Z07 package, with its carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon-fiber, down-force producing ground effects, and sticky Michelin Pilot Super Sport Cup tires (which Michelin has been working on for two years) and an adjustable rear spoiler, will set you back another $7,995.
Before you go scampering off to the local dealership to check boxes, we must submit a “Caveat Emptor”. Dealers are suspected of inflating prices on regular Z51’s. Some have been quoted as telling customers: “Chevrolet underpriced the Z51, so we are adjusting the price here at the dealership.” These instances are, however, few and far between. Price competitors for this car are few and far between as well. The Corvette Z06 is all it promises to be. Let’s just hope that prices are as well.
