All Hail Hellcat!
If you thought the 60s and 70s was the prime muscle car era, you’re probably beginning to rethink things with the brutal competition between GM, Ford, and Chrysler/Dodge going on today. There’s a wealth of power and displacement hitting the streets from the 580-horsepower Chevy Camaro ZL1 to the 662-horsepower Ford Shelby GT500. And then there’s the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat.
In its original debut, Dodge claimed that the new Challenger SRT Hellcat would have “600-plus horsepower.” That was a pretty incredible figure and definitely turned some heads with the Big Three automakers. The tire-shredding 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine had all the right parts to make it the most powerful V-8 ever produced by Dodge.
But then, right before the 4th of July and during one of the most-anticipated World Cup games in United State history, Dodge does its part for freedom and reveals that the new Challenger SRT Hellcat has 707 furious American ponies roaring beneath its hood and 650 lb-ft. of earth-moving torque.
Let’s go over that again. Seven-hundred-and-seven horsepower and six-hundred-and-fifty pound-feet of torque.
Most in the industry expected a low-to-mid 600-horsepower output for the mighty Hellcat, but very, very few saw something north of the 700-horsepower mark coming. That output makes it the most powerful muscle car, ever…EVER.
It has so much power that not just one, but two keys are needed. A black key fob limits output to “just” 500 horsepower while the red fob unleashes all 707 horsepower through the reinforced six-speed manual or a beefy TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic gearbox. That’s something out of the 1,000+ horsepower Bugatti Veyron’s playbook. Paired up with classic 1971 Challenger styling and you have the muscle car of your dreams.
In the Big Three, Chrysler has often been looked at as the weaker automaker compared to GM and Ford. But, while they may be smaller in terms of size, sales, and revenue, they’ve got a Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat that’s the biggest, baddest mother-of-all muscle cars in Detroit, and it’s giving Ford and GM the middle finger.
