Showing off their stuff in Texas.
The American tuners at Hennessey Performance are proud of their products and the state of which they are from – Texas. Their bigger and better Texas mentality is clearly evident in their 717 horsepower, supercharged HPE700 Ford Mustang. To show off exactly what it could do, John Hennessey himself took it to the test track to see what it could really throw down, Texas-style.
The Hennessey Performance team had been testing the HPE700 Ford Mustang on their company drag strip, but they were unable to break 130 mph due to the lack of space. So, John Hennessey and his son, JP, took John’s personal car and occasional daily driver/development car down to the Continental Tires proving ground in Uvalde, Texas to see what it could do.
“Thankfully, we had recently received an invitation from the guys at the Continental Tires proving grounds in Uvalde to come over and do some testing on their 8.0 mile high speed oval”, said Hennessey. “So we rounded up a team of our technicians and engineers and made a quick road trip to Uvalde to see how our HPE700 would perform at higher speeds”.
After making the 240-mile one-way trip in the HPE700 Ford Mustang, the duo spent the night and waited until the morning dew dried the next day to start testing. After a warmup lap on the oval test track with two 1.1-mile straights, John went for speed.
“Cruising through the final turn I was trying to maintain 120-130 mph while building some speed as I neared the straight”, said Hennessey. When I hit the straight, I wanted to be around 140 mph and then let all of the Mustang’s horsepower run wide open. The car pulled very strong and just kept pulling. I hit a pretty nasty bump around 170 mph and kept my foot on the gas. Then I hit the rev limiter at just over 195 mph according to the Racelogic VBox display”.
After the run, Racelogic Engineer, Joe Lachovsky, confirmed that the HPE700 Supercharged Ford Mustang recorded a top speed of 195.2 mph according to the VBox 3i GPS-based data logging system.
“I’m very happy with this first test of our specially tuned Ford Mustang GT”, said Hennessey. The aerodynamic stability of the stock bodied car gave it a balanced and predictable feel at speed. We are also very happy to have the ability to demonstrate the daily driveability of our HPE700 along with the durability. Our supercharged 5.0 V8 ran flawlessly at high rpm and high speeds while oil temps were never an issue, thanks to our Pennzoil PurePlus synthetic. We drove it to Continental, ran 195+ mph and drove it home – a round trip distance of over 500 miles”.
The Hennessey Performance HPE700 Supercharged Ford Mustang features a 2.9-liter supercharger atop the 5.0-liter V-8, ECU tune, and other upgrades for a total of 717 horsepower at 7,000 RPM and 632 lb-ft. of torque at 4,400 RPM. The sports car is able to reach 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and blast through the quarter-mile in 11.2 seconds at 131 mph. Top speed is 195.2 mph with the optional 3.15 rear axle ratio.
Only 500 examples of the Hennessey Performance HPE700 Supercharged Ford Mustang will be produced for $59,500 including the base 2015 5.0 Ford Mustang GT vehicle. Already, 50 orders have been placed.
