It’s the little things that count.
Mercedes-Benz introduced the R230 platform in 2001 and sold it as the SL-Class. In 2008, the SL received a facelift to conform to the rest of the Mercedes-Benz lineup. However, the SL is in need of another redesign, especially with an 11-year old platform. For the meantime, Piecha Design has unveiled a new SL tuning program for the grand tourer consisting of small upgrades that transform the entire SL.
The Piecha Design program for the SL gives it a new facelift with new LED lighting and spoilers. The front bumper of all SL-Class models can be fitted with new LED daytime running lights and fog lights that provide greater road presence. The front bumper can also be fitted with a three-part spoiler lip with contrasting centerpiece to improve aerodynamics. The bodywork is completed with a subtle rear spoiler mounted atop the trunk that generates downforce at the rear axle.
But, the exterior design is not finished without the new Piecha Design wheels and suspension upgrade. New Piecha MP1 monoblock five-double spoke wheels in a staggered 9.5 x 20 front and 11 x 20 rear fitment have been installed. The titanium silky-gloss polished wheels wear 255/30 R20 front and 305/25 R20 rear tires for improved grip. The fitment is completed with lowering springs for SLs with coil suspensions or a lowering module for those with the ABC suspensions system. Each upgrade lowers the car by 30 mm for a better center of gravity.
As part of the R230 tuning program, Piecha Design has also taken steps to improve the output of the SL’s range of engines. A Piecha Quadro stainless steel sport exhaust system with quad tailpipes gives the SL a deeper note and frees up a few ponies. Each engine can also be optimized with Piecha power converters that change the engine electronics for better performance.
In terms of comfort, Piecha Design has developed a new roof module. The comfort vario roof module allows drivers to open and close the roof at speeds of up to 37 mph, and includes a number of other functions.
The Piecha Design R230 Mercedes-Benz SL tuning program is currently available. Pricing for the 9.5 x 20 MP1 monoblock wheels starts at € 420 (+/- 600 USD) per wheel, while the 11 x 20 wheels are € 520 (+/- 750 USD) a piece. Pricing for other upgrades has not been released.
