ABT takes the R8 to the limit.
The DTM and ADAC GT Masters winners know a thing or two about building a great racecar, and proudly showcase their knowledge with the new ABT R8 GT R. The R8 GT R benefits from innovative motorsports technology, and thus is over 200 pounds lighter, more dynamic, and more powerful than its stock counterpart – plus it just looks fast.
A goal for the ABT Sportsline team was to give the R8 an even better weight distribution with a lightweight construction. This was achieved with the use of numerous carbon fiber parts that give the R8 greater aerodynamic properties. A redesigned carbon fiber front bumper with larger air intakes creates a menacing looks and optimizes airflow at the front of the car. Along the side are carbon fiber side skirts, door panels, and side mirrors. A large adjustable carbon fiber wing creates downforce while a carbon fiber rear skirt reduces lift at the rear axle. The hatch and engine hood are also in carbon fiber, and feature a Makrolon cover for reduced weight. The body modifications contribute to a weight reduction of 220 pounds over the stock Audi R8.
The team has given the ABT R8 GT R a true racing engine, producing 620 horsepower – 95 more than the stock R8 5.2. The increase in power is the result of a sport exhaust system and engine tuning at the hands of a championship racing team. The extreme power of the ABT R8 GT R tuning program coupled with the GT R’s light weight allows for it to spring to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds and reach 124 mph in just 9.9 seconds. Top speed is just over 200 mph.
Driving dynamics are further enhanced with the use of a sports suspension with adjustable height and dampers. This enables the driver to adjust the ride for optimum handling on the track or on the street. A ceramic brake system with high performance brake pads provides immense stopping power and is highly resistant to brake fade. A set of lightweight ABT CR alloys measure 19×8 inches at the front and 11×18 inches at the rear, and are shod in Michelin sport cup tires for outstanding levels of grip.
The interior is as close to a racecar as you can get. Supportive Recaro race seats with four-point race harnesses have been fitted, while a stainless steel roll bar and fire extinguisher increase safety. The carbon fiber steering wheel further alludes to the GT R’s racing character. Alcantara adorns the center console, dashboard, rear storage area, headliner, and B-pillar covering for a comfortable cabin.
ABT Sportsline also offers motorsports driving gear, an onboard video system, and data mod for a true racing experience. Only 25 of the race-bred sports car will be built by ABT. Pricing for the ABT R8 GT R has not been released.
