While the Volkswagen Automotive Group specialists at ABT Sportsline may be about improving performance and athleticism of cars, they don’t neglect the bigger, often bulkier SUVs. In fact, CEO, Hans-Jürgen Abt, claims that they’ve been a vital part of the brand’s success.
“The SUV success story started in 2002, also for us, “said Abt. “It was the Touareg, followed by the Q7, Tiguan, Q5 and Q3. But the Volkswagen is special to us.” The oil-burning pair of Touaregs were the subject of the most recent ABT Sportsline engineering.
The 3.0 TDI V-6 and 4.2 TDI V-8 engines found in the new Volkswagen Touareg got the full ABT Power “New Generation” treatment. The smaller turbodiesel V-6 got a healthy boost to 290 horsepower and 479 lb-ft. of torque. The larger 4.2-liter turbodiesel V-8 engine went all the way up to 385 horsepower and earth-moving 649 lb-ft. of torque with the upgrades.
While those torque figures are enough to tow you out of your seat, the suspension and wheels will help make carving up corners easier for the SUV. Here, ABT Sportsline can install their suspension springs that reduce the ride height by 40 mm up front and 35 mm at the rear, or customers can opt for the ABT Level-Control system that reduces height by 40- and 30 mm, respectively. ABT Sportsline can also give the Volkswagen Touareg a bit more presence with the addition of 9.0 x 20 or 10.0 x 22 CR or DR alloy wheels with 275/45 R20 or 295/30 R22 sport tires for some extra grip.
To make the Volkswagen Touareg look the part with its new power boost, ABT Sportsline designed a few aerodynamic and aesthetic accessories for the exterior. The front fascia benefits from a new body-colored grille add-on with ABT logo, and new headlight covers that give the SUV a meaner face. A new rear skirt set with dual 90-mm tailpipes sits below a new rear wing spoiler for some added presence.
Inside, the team at ABT Sportsline gave the Touareg new floor and trunk mats along with door entrance lights for that special touch.
