Plug it in and perform.
The BMW i8 essentially revolutionized performance and efficiency for the German automaker. The traditional way of getting from point-A to point-B has always been fun, but doing so with less fuel and advanced technology is pretty exciting as well. Their new BMW i8 is a glimpse into the future and how enjoyable it can still be with more efficient propulsion systems, and AC Schnitzer Automobile Technik is making it even better.
AC Schnitzer didn’t focus on creating more power and dissecting the advanced plug-in-hybrid powertrain. Instead, they used their lightweight German tuning magic to create an aerodynamic styling program and optimize the chassis to slice through air and hug the pavement without adding weight.
The AC Schnitzer BMW i8 gains a new carbon fiber front spoiler that reduces lift and curves upwards as it extends towards both side of the bumper. The spoiler blends in with the new set of carbon fiber side skirts that create a plane prior to the rear wheels and curves upwards to help channel cool air to the braking system. At the rear, a new carbon fiber spoiler wing generates downforce and emphasizes the smooth teardrop profile of the German sports car for an even more seductive shape.
The state-of-the-art, high-tech design of the BMW i8 carries over to the new AC Schnitzer AC1 wheel set that graces the new plug-in-hybrid sports car. The German company has reimagined the classic double-spoke design with the new AC1 forged wheels. Each wheel features a single spoke at the outer rim that expands into two spokes at the hub to create a unique trapezoidal shape that flows into the five-cornered hub cap sporting the AC Schnitzer logo. Each wheel is approximately 30-percent lighter than the standard cast wheel, leading to even better overall performance from the reduction in rotating mass.
Up front, the AC Schnitzer BMW i8 wears its new shoes in a wide 8.5J x 21 while the rear staggers in with a wider 9.5J x 21 setup. Even though they are bigger, the AC1 wheels are still 9.7 pounds lighter than the factory i8 “Turbine 625” wheels. New 245/35 R21 front and 285/30 R21 tires help grab the asphalt even more for better handling.
The final boost to handling comes in the form of a suspension that is 25 mm lower at the front and 20 mm at the rear. This leads to a better center of gravity and improves the overall dynamics of the sports car.
Inside, the team at AC Schnitzer gave the BMW i8 new additions that emphasize the lightweight nature of the exterior upgrades. A new aluminum pedal set and foot rests help drivers feel in control during their on-track exploits while velour floor mats provide a high-end, custom look.
The new AC Schnitzer BMW i8 upgrade program is currently available for the plug-in hybrid sports car. Pricing has not been released.
