The ‘Launch Edition’ of the Alfa Romeo 4C was presented to the world at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. Alfa will make an exclusive UK presentation at the Goodwood Festival of Speed
The 4C engine will be an all-aluminum, direct-injection, 240 hp turbo engine, developing 258 lb-ft of torque. The powertrain, planted in the middle and driving the rear wheels, will render a top speed in excess of 155 mph, a 0-62mph time of 4.5 seconds, 1.1 G of lateral acceleration in corners. The 4C will get amazing traction with Launch Control and Alfa’s TCT transmission. Weight and handling were the priorities of this design. Judging by the Pirelli P Zeros fitted and the inboard MacPherson struts attached, this was a purpose-built sports car.
The Alfa 4C represents Alfa’s much-delayed return to the U.S. (hopefully). With the 4C’s styling, Alfa kept faithful to the concept car which drew critical acclaim when it debuted in Geneva in 2011.
Alfa has stated that the 4C is an homage to Scaglione’s legendary Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. With the engineering and packaging innovations introduced in the 4C, that same formula of making racing gear for the road seems to have been achieved.
The Goodwood Festival of Speed is a celebration of automotive power and engineering – two virtues that Alfa has staked its racing and road car reputation on. Future driving opportunities will determine whether that reputation remains intact.
