Three flavors of fun.
The Golf R is the top-of-the-line in terms of performance and sport in the entire Volkswagen lineup. It’s all-wheel drive and tuned 2.0 TSI engine paired up with its sporty chassis is a spicy recipe for a hot hatch and makes for quite a bit of fun on the road. The team at B&B Automobiltechnik has created a big upgrade program designed specifically for the Golf R that focuses on nothing but improving the overall performance of the car from the engine to the chassis.
The 2.0 TSI turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine that powers the Volkswagen Golf R is already tuned from the factory but B&B Automobiltechnik has created three flavors of fun for the hot hatch. In Stage 1, the German tuner adds a new electronic injection characteristic map for the ECU and slightly increased the boost pressure to create a total 360 hp and 332 lb-ft. of torque.
The next, “medium” Stage 2 of tuning sees the Volkswagen Golf R gain a new enlarged and cross-section-optimized intermediate exhaust pipe with sport catalytic converter and an increase in boost pressure of 3.6 PSI. The exhaust system increases output by 14 horsepower by itself and can be purchased separately as an option. The aforementioned upgrades along with the modifications in Stage 1 boost output up to 385 horsepower and 354 lb-ft. of torque. This allows the Golf R to accelerate to 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and 124 mph comes along in just 17.5 ticks of the clock.
For those that want to go all-out in terms of power, B&B offers a Stage 3 tune for the Golf R. The previous upgrades in Stages 1 and 2 are installed along with a modified air intake system, new turbocharger, new exhaust system with intermediate pipe and racing catalytic converter, along with a new ECU tune. After B&B Automobiltechnik sprinkles their magic over the 2.0 TSI in Stage 3, output is pegged at 420 horsepower and 391 lb-ft. of torque.
B&B recommends that their special oil-cooling system is installed with all three stages of tuning to ensure maximum reliability. The German tuner also offers a cat-back stainless steel exhaust as well as a racing exhaust that bumps power by 20 ponies. For those that want to get really crazy, B&B Automobiltechnik can install a full LPG full-throttle-control system.
Instead of creating all sorts of flashy bodywork, B&B focused on making the chassis even more nimble. A height, compression, and rebound-adjustable B&B coilover kit can be installed along with a specially-tuned setup for the Golf R, or customers can opt for a set of performance springs that lower ride height by 25- and 20 mm at the front and rear, respectively. A set of stabilizers at the front and rear can aid in sharpening up handling and reducing body roll even further if needed. Weight-optimized wheels measuring 8.5 x 20 with grippy 235/30R20 tires help to generate even more traction while four- or six-piston high performance brakes bring things to a screeching halt.
All three stages of tuning, the chassis goodies, and more are all available for the seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf R. All of the prices and more can be found on the B&B Automobiltechnik website.
