The prototypical sports sedan.
The BMW M5 has been the go-to sports sedan of which all others are benchmarked against in the automotive industry. The M5 has been one of the quintessential sports sedans for drivers, combining everything from a luxury sport-oriented interior to a tuned chassis, and high-output engine.
The first official BMW M5 rolled off as a 1985 model with a 3.6-liter inline-six achieving 286 HP at 6500 RPM and a 152 mph top speed. It took only 6.5 seconds to get to 62 mph, which was pretty quick for its time. The car itself was sort of subtle and didn’t feature all kinds of aggressive body work, spoilers, or in-your-face accessories. It was all about doing its business, and it did it well.
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the M5, BMW put the pedal to the metal and melted some rear tires in an honorary salute to its predecessors.
