The most powerful BMW production model, ever.
Thirty years ago a group of BMW Motorsport GmbH engineers decided to stuff a variant of the 3.5-liter inline-six cylinder used in the BMW M1 into the 5-Series. The BMW M5 was born and shot its way to the top as the fastest production sedan in the world. Since then, the M5 has been the go-to, prototypical sports sedan bringing forth the perfect balance of sport and luxury. To celebrate the 30th anniversary, BMW has created a limited-run of 300 “30 Jahre M5” models with 30 coming over to the United States.
There are a number of things that make the new BMW “30 Jahre M5” limited edition special, but arguably the most eye-popping is the fact that it is the most powerful production BMW ever produced. The 4.4-liter, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine produces a total of 600 horsepower and 516 lb-ft. of torque thanks to increased boost pressure and an ECU tune. This shoots the BMW “30 Jahre M5” to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. The sports sedan is also more nimble thanks to a new control module that allows the Active M Differential to activate quicker for greater traction. BMW also enhanced the M-specific Servotronic function and M Dynamic mode to improve the overall driving experience even further.
The differences don’t end with the engine. The exterior of the BMW “30 Jahre M5” wears a special Frozen Dark Silver Metallic paint and black chrome BMW “30 Jahre M5” badging on the front fenders, front grille surrounds, door handles, and even the tailpipes. Finishing it off on the exterior are new 20-inch, seven twin-spoke, bi-color M lightweight alloy wheels.
Inside, the BMW “30 Jahre M5” the cabin is draped in a special black leather and alcantara combo. The M multifunctional seats are covered in the two materials and sport embroidered BMW “30 Jahre M5” badges on the backrest. Black alcantara continues to the center console and door panels while the roof wears an alcantara anthracite color. The passenger side of the dashboard’s aluminum trace strip proudly displays the 1/300 identifications number, further differentiating it from the standard M5 model.
Only 300 examples of the BMW “30 Jahre M5” will be made while just 30 will make their way over to the United States. Of those 30, only 29 will be sold, with the 30th being retained by BMW of North America, LLC. to possibly be sold at a later date. Each model will start at $138,275 and include an invitation to a one-day M Driving School at The Thermal Club in Palm Springs, CA.
With such high demand expected for the BMW “30 Jahre M5”, BMW of North America, LLC. will be using their Instagram (@BMWUSA) starting on Saturday, May 17th leading up to Wednesday, May 21st where customers can call the dedicated BMW Customer Relations Hotline to reserve one of the 30 BMW “30 Jahre M5” models. The Instagram account will be sending out hints, fun facts, and portions of the number on the days leading up to the May 21st call-in date.
