BMW has just revealed its second-generation X5 M50d performance diesel SUV based on the 2014 X5. Don’t break out the champagne and music, though because we can’t have it. The X5 M50d features a 3.0 liter straight-six hooked to an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive, producing 381 horsepower and 546 pound-feet of torque. This engine is the world’s most powerful straight-six diesel engine. Across the pond, the engine is available in 5-series and X6 models. We don’t get those models either…sigh!
The X5 M50d goes from 0-62 mph in 5.3 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph. European owners can enjoy these numbers along with other very satisfying figures: 35 mpg and 177 grams of CO2 per km.
The BMW X5 M50d comes with all the M Performance goodies they could stuff into the package. Upgrades include: Adaptive M suspension with Dynamic Damper Control and air suspension at the rear axle, 19-inch M light alloy wheels, a subtle aero kit, a sports steering wheel, metal scuff plates, interior details and M badging. Porsche’s Cayenne Diesel S and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon certainly provide ample competition for the X5 M50d in the tire-smoking school-run vehicle category.
The X5 M50d goes on sale in selected markets this November when sales of the new 2014 BMW X5 lineup commence in the U.S. BMW has not disclosed prices for the X5 M50d just yet. No matter what the cost, there is still no amount of cash that can get that car to our shores. The BMW X5 M50d is a reasonable argument for the Gray Market.
