The Brabus 850 XL is the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 of your Dreams

Brabus 850 XL

Big. Brutal. Brabus.

The seven-passenger Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class doesn’t seem to have any sense of “sport” because of its significant size. While the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 has a bit more perceivable muscle, it doesn’t have the true brutality that a real super car would. The Brabus 850 XL, however, is a hammer of the Gods.

The massive SUV gains a custom-tailored high-performance engine to make it go like hell. Brabus engineers increased the displacement of the twin-turbocharged V-8 engine in the 850 XL to 6.0-liters thanks to an enlarged 99 mm cylinder bore and 96 mm stroke with corresponding forged pistons and balanced billet crankshaft. New optimized heads, a carbon fiber intake module with dual air filter boxes, and carbon fiber air ducts increase airflow even more.

The larger engine of the Brabus 850 XL also benefits from modified exhaust manifolds with bigger Brabus turbochargers and compressor units. All of the piping benefits from “Gold Heat Reflection” sheathing that keeps temperatures down. Making it all rumble and bumble like a true diabolical machine is a Brabus stainless steel exhaust system with 75 mm downpipes, metal catalytic converters, and valve-controlled flaps.

Tying all the hardware together is a specially-tuned software upgrade for the twin-turbocharged V-8 engine. This final touch gives the Brabus 850 XL a whopping 838 bhp at 5,400 RPM and monstrous 1,069 lb-ft. of torque from 2,500 to 4,500 RPM. With that mountain of power, the 2.6-ton machine can rocket to 62 mph from rest in just 4.2 seconds. Top speed limited to 186 mph for the sake of the tires trying to harness that kind of performance. If customers don’t want the full-on engine upgrade, Brabus also offers 622 bhp and 690 bhp upgrades for the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 models.

Handling all of that power is no easy task, but the new Brabus Monoblock “Platinum Edition” forged wheels are up to the task. The lightweight wheels measure a massive 11.0J x 23 at the front and rear to match the substantial nature of the Brabus upgrade program, and are shod in 295/35 R23 Pirelli, Continental, or Yokohama tires. In addition to the new wheel fitment, the high-performance SUV can be given a new lowering module for the Airmatic suspension that reduces the ride height by about 30 mm for a better center of gravity.

Visually, the already athletic looks of the Mercedes-AMG GLS63 got even bolder thanks to Brabus. The mighty SUV gained a full aerodynamic package that reduces lift, improves cooling, and generates downforce for better high-speed performance. Up front, a new spoiler lip and air deflectors with LED markers on the side intakes of the bumper create a more intimidating presence. A new carbon fiber diffuser insert integrates the quad tailpipe setup and hints at the added performance.

To complete the overall package, the Brabus 850 XL can be outfitted with a full custom-tailored interior. The show car features a brown Mastik leather interior with braided leather highlights throughout along with Brabus ‘Checkered Flag’ carbon elements. Drivers can enjoy new aluminum foot pedals, RACE design paddle shifters, and matching aluminum door pins.
