Twin-turbo V-8 POWER.
In the quest for a greener future, Mercedes-Benz has recently introduced a pair of new V-8 engines for the S-Class and CL-Class models, and their AMG variants. A new 5.5-liter V-8 replaces the renowned 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V-8s used in the AMG models, while a new 4.7-liter V-8 replaces the naturally aspirated 5.5-liters used in the CL500 and S500. Both engines are smaller than the units they replace and utilize two-turbochargers to effectively boost performance while increasing efficiency.
Although the main goal for Mercedes was to increase efficiency with these new engines, Brabus believed that they packed a great deal of tuning potential. The German tuner has a history of producing vehicles that meet or exceed current fuel economy and emissions standards, so it was only a matter of time before the two engines were modified by Brabus engineers. In total, Brabus has developed four different programs (two for each engine), along with a host of aerodynamic and drivability upgrades for the S63 AMG.
Brabus B50 – 490 PowerXtra CGI:
The Brabus B50 – 490 PowerXtra CGI is a plug-and-play tuning module developed specifically for the twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V-8 that comes standard in the S500 and CL500 models. The device is available for € 4,900 (+/-7,000 USD), and brings power output from the stock 435 hp (429 bhp) to 490 hp (482 bhp) and 575 lb-ft. of torque.
Brabus B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI:
The Brabus B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI is an even more potent power upgrade for the 4.7-liter V-8 in both S500 and CL500 models. The kit includes a plug-and-play device and a supplementary intercooler, increasing power to 520 hp (512 bhp) and 604 lb-ft. of torque. The kit pushes the top speed for both the CL500 and S500 to 188 mph with the Brabus V/Max unit. The entire B50 – 520 PowerXtra CGI is available for € 5,900 (+/-8,600 USD).
Brabus B63 – 584 PowerXtra CGI:
For the S63 AMG and CL63 AMG models without the Mercedes-Benz performance package, Brabus has developed a B63 – 584 powerkit. The kit consists of a plug-and-play unit and water-to-air intercooler driven by an electric auxiliary pump to lower the charge air temperature. The result is an increase of 40 hp (39 bhp) for a total of 584 hp. The B63 – 584 PowerXtra CGI is priced at € 5,900 (+/-8,600 USD).
Brabus B63 – 620 PowerXtra CGI:
The Brabus B63 – 620 PowerXtra CGI was developed for the S63 AMG and CL63 AMG models equipped with the optional Mercedes-Benz performance package. Power rises from the stock 563 hp and 664 lb-ft. to an impressive 620 hp (610 bhp) at 5,500 RPM and 737 lb-ft. of torque from 2,250 to 3,750 RPM. With the new B63 – 620, the 0-62 mph sprint for both AMG models drops to just 4.3 seconds, while the top speed is increased to 200 mph (with Brabus V/max). The complete upgrade is also available for € 5,900 (+/-8,600 USD).
Brabus also offers a host of additional upgrades for S63 AMG owners that aren’t satisfied with just one of the tuning upgrades. A stainless-steel adjustable exhaust with steering wheel-mounted controls is available for the 5.5-liter V-8, and gives drivers the ability to switch between a quiet “coming home” mode or vocal “sport” mode. For better grip, monoblock alloy wheels can be fitted with sizes ranging from 19-21 inches in diameter with Pirelli or Yokohama high-performance tires. In addition, a limited-slip differential with a 40 percent locking rate can also be installed.
Brabus also went to the wind tunnel with the Mercedes-Benz S63 AMG. A bodykit made of exposed carbon fiber can be fitted to the potent S-Class, and features a front spoiler, carbon fiber gille moldings, aluminum sport fenders, carbon fiber rear diffuser, and carbon fiber rear spoiler to reduce lift and improve high-speed stability.
As always, Brabus will custom tailor the interior of the S63 in a variety or leather, alcantara, and trims.
All of the Brabus powerkits for the Mercedes-Benz S500, CL500, S63 AMG, and CL63 AMG models are currently available. Pricing for the individual S63 AMG aerodynamic and interior upgrades have not been released.
