Bugatti Unveils a Special Edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse at Pebble Beach

Inspired by the Type 37A.

At the Monterey Auto Week, automakers and collectors from around the world bring unique one-offs, historic models, pristine vintage automobiles, concept cars, and new exclusive editions. It’s an event that can, and will, overload the circuits of any automotive enthusiast.

At the 2012 event, Bugatti unveiled a new special edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse at “The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering” to pay tribute to a legendary French race car – the Type 37A. Built in 1928, the vintage race car was very successful in racing, and one was even owned and driven by the famed Pierre Veyron. The Type 37A show car that the new Bugatti Veyron pays homage to is owned by the one-and-only Jay Leno.

The new special edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse boasts all of the go-fast goodies that make the super car the fastest production roadster ever. The 8.0-liter, quad-turbocharged W-16 engine produces a whopping 1,200 horsepower at 6,400 RPM and 1,106 lb-ft. of torque from 3,000 to 5,000 RPM thanks to larger turbochargers, bigger intercoolers, modified air ducting, and reduced backpressure. The 199-horsepower increase over the standard Veyron Grand Sport even comes with a slight reduction in fuel consumption, making its 0-62 mph time of 2.6 seconds, and 255 mph (410 km/h) top speed (124 mph with the top open) top speed even more impressive.

The Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse also features a reinforced drivetrain, lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels, dampers derived from motorsports, and tweaked aerodynamics that help improve cooling and optimize downforce. The double rear diffuser with centrally-mounted exhaust, twin air scoops for the engine that double as roll-over protection, and a roof spoiler that reduces cabin wind noise helps differentiate the model from the standard Grand Sport.

But for Pebble Beach, Bugatti’s special edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse was configured specifically to match the iconic Type 37A race car. The upper portion of the super car including the roof and air scoops behind the cockpit was finished in “Bianco,” while the side skirts, front spoiler, radiator grille, rear bumper, rear diffuser, inside of the wheel spokes, and underside of the rear spoiler were given a coat of “New Light Blue” paint, matching the color scheme of the Type 37A owned by Jay Leno. The interior was also outfitted in soft Cognac leather to contrast the exterior colors and create a warm and luxurious cabin.

The new special edition Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse can be purchased for $2.5 million. Each of the 300 Veyrons that Bugatti has built features their own individual character thanks to the virtually limitless range of custom options. The Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse will also be available with the same level of custom-tailored design and quality to create the perfect super car for owners.
