A special partnership for a one-off birthday gift.
When Maserati celebrated its 100th anniversary, it wanted to do something big and memorable. There were lots of shows, some special edition models, and the road-going Maserati MC12 Corsa. Making a motorsport-spec car street-legal is no easy task, but the edo competition team was more than happy to help, and created the one-off edo MC12 VC.
The reason that an Italian automaker chose a German aftermarket company to transform an MC12 Corsa into a street-legal machine was because edo competition had already performed that feat in 2005 with a TÜV-certified vehicle. Instead of creating a full team of engineers to do that, Maserati enlisted the help of the Germans that already had the experience of performing the conversion.
The new edo MC12 VC, standing for ‘Versione Corse’, is based on a 2004 Maserati MC12. The entire conversion for the one-off model was overseen by Maserati project manager, Maurizio Leschiutta who had a strict set of specifications.
The edo MC12 VC could only slightly deviate from the racing car to meet road-legal requirements. Conveniences like the ability to refuel at a standard fuel station were needed along with door locks, a properly ventilated windshield, street-legal wheels and tires, proper lighting and signals, and a front-end fan-supported cooling system. The chassis had to be upgraded with an adjustable suspension that had track and street settings alongside a disc brake setup with proper cooling and emergency braking.
edo competition was also given the green light to install their own radio-controlled exhaust system with adjustable valve flaps for the 6.0-liter V-12 engine. The naturally aspirated motor produces a thrilling 755 horsepower at 8,000 RPM and 546 lb-ft. of torque at 5,500 RPM. Because it tips the scales at just 2,756 lbs. thanks to its carbon fiber monocoque, it can hit 62 mph from rest in approximately 3.0 seconds and 124 mph in only 6.0 seconds. Top speed is a whopping 205 mph.
After seven months of development, building, altering, and more, by the six-member edo competition team led by Edo Karabegovic, the edo MC12 VC was given its final coat of Victory Blue paint. All of the road-legal certifications were obtained and a special ‘MA-MC 12’ registration plate was installed to show off its public legality.
With everything completed, the edo competition and Maserati team took the edo MC12 VC to the Hockenheimring where Maserati driver, Michael Bartels got behind the wheel. After some serious driving and a few minor adjustments, the edo MC12 VC was given the stamp of approval.
The special one-off edo MC12 VC project was successfully completed after seven months to celebrate Maserati’s 100th anniversary. The car is currently on display at the Maserati Museum in Modena and is shown around the world at various exhibits.
