And there is a new Mirage in the works.
One of the most iconic and memorable Porsche models in the past decade was the Carrera GT. It brought the latest in motorsports technology to the road and required a skilled driver to push to the limit. Just over 1,200 were produced and they hold a special place in the world of exotic automobiles.
It’s very hard to improve upon a vehicle such as the Porsche Carrera GT where an automaker pours all of its technology into creating a driving masterpiece. However, Gemballa was able to make it even better and more exciting with their Mirage GT, of which only 25 were planned to be produced.
Now, years later, the final two Gemballa Mirage GTs are in production and mark the end of an era for the German tuning company. However, there is a bright future ahead with the Porsche 918 Spyder.
The Gemballa Mirage GT managed to somehow improve upon the track-inspired, hardcore beast that was the Porsche Carrera GT. The 5.7-liter, naturally-aspirated V-10 engine boasted a factory 612 horsepower, 435 lb-ft. of torque output that was boosted up to 670 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. through the use of a new exhaust system with four solid trims and classic pre-V-6 Formula 1 sound. The added power helps propel the Mirage GT to 62 mph in just 3.7 seconds and to a top speed of 208.16 mph.
The Porsche Carrera GT was known as being difficult to drive due to its lightweight two-plate ceramic dry clutch. Gemballa was even able to improve upon that with a new sport-type coupling with special linings that made it easier to drive and operate in the city during stop-and-go traffic.
Real carbon fiber makes up the aerodynamically-optimized body kit that focuses on downforce for better high-speed handling. A three-part air inlet helps keep things cool while new front and rear aprons, and a rear spoiler create a more dynamic character.
The final two Gemballa Mirage GT models are in production and will soon be delivered to their respective customers, marking an end to an era for the German company. However, as one door closes, another one opens and Gemballa is currently developing the new Mirage based on the Porsche 918 Spyder. Even though the design has not been revealed, orders are still coming in for the new hybrid supercar upgrade program from Gemballa.
