All the driving fun you’ll ever need.
It’s not the biggest, most powerful, or even fastest model in the BMW lineup but it will quite possibly be the most fun. We’re talking about the new 2016 BMW M2 Coupe and it’s coming to dealers in the spring of 2016 with the goal of putting a huge smile on driver’s faces.
Unlike some of the cars that preceded it, the new 2016 BMW M2 is more powerful thanks to its 3.0-liter TwinPower Turbo inline-six. A TwinScroll turbocharger, advanced High Precision Direct Injection, Double-VANOS, Valvetronic, and an innovative oil lubrication system put the motor right at home on the track. The new 2016 BMW M2 makes a healthy 365 horsepower at 6,500 RPM, which is more than its 1 M Coupe predecessor. Torque is a mighty 343 lb-ft. from 1,400 to 5,560 RPM, which can grow to 369 lb-ft. between 1,450 and 4,750 RPM thanks to the overboost function. That’s more than the previous-generation BMW M3. A quad exhaust with electronically-controlled valve flaps allows drivers to let their performance be heard above the screeching tires.
Customers will have the option of selecting the standard six-speed manual with rev-matching and dry-sump lubrication or the optional seven-speed M Double-Clutch transmission (M DCT). Armed with the M DCT with Launch Control engaged, the 2016 BMW M2 can accelerate to 60 mph from rest in 4.2 seconds (4.4 seconds with manual), and reach an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.
Dynamics – as with every BMW M model – were a huge focus for engineers. The 2016 BMW M2 has borrowed a great deal of technology and components from the M3 and M4 with aluminum parts that reduce weight while sharpening its cornering skills. An Active M Differential at the rear has the ability to lock between 0- and 100-percent with a locking power between 1,843 lb-ft. in just 150 ms.
The attention to detail that BMW engineers displayed with the creation of the M2 can be seen with the model-specific tires. The rubber was incorporated into the development of the axle construction and suspension to ensure that each tires are capable of performing a specific task when it comes to grip. The 9.0J x 19 front and 10.0J x 19 rear forged aluminum alloy wheels wear special Michelin Super Sport tires measuring 245/35 ZR19 and 265/35 ZR19, respectively. Behind these wheels sit high-performance four-piston front and two-piston rear brake calipers painted metallic blue with the M-logo. The 15-inch front and 14.5-inch rear rotors help cut weight and rotating mass for even better overall performance.
While the technical and mechanical details burst into the future, the 2016 BMW M2 takes quite a bit of inspiration from its forbearers such as the BMW 2002 turbo and 3.0 CSL visually. The “shark nose” design of the BMW kidney grille. A side swage line starting behind the front axle runs towards the rear and adds a dramatic touch to the classic profile of the 2016 BMW M2. A large front track and Air Curtains up front improve cooling and downforce at the front axle, and contribute to a reduced drag of 5-percent and reduced lift of 35-percent.
Visually separating the 2016 BMW M2 from the rest of the 2-Series lineup are front and rear fenders that were extended outwards by 2.1- and 3.1-inches, respectively. An M rear spoiler, wide rear apron with vertical red reflectors, and integrated diffuser with quad high-gloss chrome tailpipes complete the more aggressive visual design of the sports car.
The 2016 BMW M2 also brings the M-sport fun to the interior where new sports seats wearing black Dakota leather with blue stitching and M-logos on the backrests hold driver and passenger in place with adjustable side bolsters. M footrests, knee pads on the center console, M2 specific dials and gauges set it apart from the standard 2-Series model. Carbon fiber and Alcantara were the choice to trim and finish the cabin.
All of the advanced electronic driving aids, BMW ConnectedDrive, GoPro app, and more come standard or as an option for drivers. The 2016 BMW M2 will be available in Long Beach Blue metallic, Alpine White, Black Sapphire metallic, and Mineral Grey metallic. Deliveries will begin in Spring of 2016 with pricing being released at a later date.
