Friday FAIL: Another Reason Why Drinking and Driving is Always a Bad Idea

Friday FAIL Camaro I-90

Mixing it with road rage will always end badly.

This past weekend, I was driving from my home in Rochester, NY to my Grandmother’s in Dunkirk, NY. The trip takes me on the I-90 through Batavia and Buffalo. Shortly into my drive on I-90 prior to the Batavia exit I noticed tire marks going from the two-lane interstate into the grass, where it looked like a large accident took place. I remember wondering what the heck had happened to cause the damage.

Well, now I know.

On April 21st, Tim Linton was driving from eastbound on the I-90 from Rochester to Buffalo for work with his dashboard-mounted camera recording. He was in the left lane behind a pickup truck and another vehicle while two tractor trailers were in the right lane. Suddenly, an angry Chevy Camaro driver sped up from the right lane, trying to pass the logjam of vehicles as they drove up the hill near Genesee Community College. The hill has an incline that can be difficult for any vehicle to maintain their speed, making this a prime point for a line of cars to get backed up in the both lanes.

After passing the hill, traffic began to return to normal speed, however, the pickup truck was not speeding up past the tractor trailer in the right lane, creating a seemingly impassable wall of traffic.

Now, in all the times that I’ve driven the I-90 I’ve encountered this many, many times. There are a great deal of people in Western New York that just do not know how to drive or understand the “keep right except to pass” rule. But the actions of the Camaro driver are never warranted.

The Camaro driver, 32-year-old Kiran Thapa of Columbus, Ohio, decided that enough was enough and began to pass on the left shoulder. As Thapa got ahead of the pickup, he cut the wheel back into the left lane, smashing into the pickup and forcing it directly into the tractor trailer. All three cars slid into the grass along the right side of the road and came to a stop.

Thapa, it turns out, allegedly had a blood-alcohol-content of .19 percent and was also drinking in his car during the drive. Thapa was arrested and also faces multiple traffic infractions and first degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle. He was taken to the Genesee County Jail on $2,500 bail.

Thankfully, nobody was hurt in this alcohol-fueled road rage.

How stupid and crazy was this Chevy Camaro driver on the I-90?
