Where the rubber meets the ‘Ring.
Earlier in September, Porsche grabbed headlines and shocked the automotive world by shattering the Nürburgring Nordschleife lap record by 14 seconds for an astonishing time of 6:57 with the 918 Spyder. Breaking the seven minute mark for a production, street-legal supercar is incredible, but it wasn’t just a result of the 918 Spyder’s sheer horsepower.
Michelin was right alongside Porsche as they developed the newest hybrid supercar. The new Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires were created by Michelin specifically for the 918 Spyder and they feature a number of unique aspects that emphasize the strengths of the car.
The new Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires feature a new tread pattern with a bigger external shoulder for improved dry handling. Michelin also uses dual rubber compounds with the inside utilizing a low rolling resistance compound, while a grippier outer for maximum lateral grip.
The team that set the Nürburgring record worked for months preparing every little detail and included Michelin engineers during the entire process. In the end, they proved to be successful to the point where some claim that the 918 Spyder could do the same lap even faster.
