The Volkswagen Polo might be in the supermini class of vehicles, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t be a really fun and exciting car serving up a white-knuckled experience. Just take the rally-spec Polo R WRC that competes around the globe as an extreme example. While that version isn’t anything near street legal, the Wimmer RST Polo R WRC will allow you to speed on the roads without worry.
Wimmer RST already had some experience with tuning the Volkswagen Polo and its 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine. Their basic tuning package pushed output up to an impressive 220 horsepower and 258 lb-ft. of torque, which is good for a 151 mph top speed.
But the real monster is unleashed in the Level IV package. Here, the Wimmer RST Polo R WRC gains a new turbocharger, air intake with high-performance K&N air filter, six-bar fuel pump with modified high-pressure pump, intercooler, and software tune. The potent hatchback also gains a full stainless steel sports exhaust with valve control, Y-pipe, and sport catalytic converter to cut down on backpressure. The result is an impressive 420 horsepower and 354 lb-ft. of torque, besting many sports cars on the market today.
After the 10,200-euro package is installed, the Wimmer RST Polo R WRC is capable of a 174 mph top speed, which is utter insanity for a compact hatchback.
Helping to handle all of that extra power are new OZ Racing wheels that measure 8.0 x 17 at both axles and are shod in stickier 215/40/17 tires. A new KW Variant 3 coilover suspension was also installed on the red, white, and blue Wimmer RST Polo R WRC to give drivers greater control and dynamics in the corners.
