Time to mow the Nürburgring.
Cutting the grass may be a chore, but it can sometimes be a wonderful escape from the daily grind. The new Honda Mean Mower on the other hand, is an escape to a different world of high-performance grass shredding.
Imagine a mower than can cut your entire lawn in mere minutes and make you feel as though you’re a Formula 1 or Touring Car driver as you hit every apex in your yard. The Honda Mean Mower is what you’ve been dreaming about. Built alongside Honda (UK) title-winning British Touring Car Champion (BTCC) partner, Team Dynamics, the Honda Mean Mower is a high-performance, one-off mower that can mow the Nürburgring and then race on it afterwards.
The goal for the Honda Mean Mower was to create an incredibly fast mower that could still cut grass while retaining the factory appearance. Team Dynamics started out with a Honda HF2620 Lawn Tractor and fabricated a new 4130 chromoly steel alloy chassis and bespoke suspension with ATV wheels. A 1,000 cc engine borrowed from a Honda VTR Firestorm motorcycle spits out 109 horsepower and 69 lb-ft. of torque at 130 decibels under load thanks to a Scorpion exhaust system.
Power is sent to the wheels through a custom-built six-speed paddle shifting gearbox, geared for speeds up to 130 mph, making the Honda Mean Mower the fastest grass-cutter you’ll ever ride. Weighing in at only 309 lbs., the mower boasts an impressive 532 bhp/ton power-to-weight ratio and can sprint from 0-60 mph in about four seconds flat. Honda and Team Dynamics have already reached 100 mph on a race track.
The Honda Mean Mower also features a high-capacity oil cooler and secondary water-cooling radiator system to keep things running smooth on the track or lawn while fuel is supplied from a tank in the grass bag. Beneath the custom-tailored carbon fiber cutter deck is a 3 mm steel cutting cable spinning at 4,000 RPM thanks to a pair of electric motors. The Honda Mean Mower is capable of cutting grass at an incredible 15 mph; more than twice the speed of the lawn tractor from which it is based.
Drivers are held in place by a custom Cobra sports seat and control the high-performance mower with a Morris Minor-supplied steering rack. ATV wheels are utilized for maximum traction and grip, and wear super-soft tires for the asphalt.
“Honda is a great believer in collaboration, pushing boundaries and creating extraordinary pieces of engineering,” said Kate Saxton, Manager – Corporate Affairs, at Honda (UK)” This project provided the perfect opportunity to not only highlight the breadth of our product offering but to also promote our sporty heritage and support our reputation as an innovative company. Above all else, we love a challenge!”
The Honda Mean Mower uses Honda parts wherever possible, whether it’s from their motorcycle, ATV, or lawn equipment. The rest of the high-performance mower uses parts custom-made by Team Dynamics and their partners.
Unfortunately, there are no plans to produce and sell the Honda Mean Mower to the public. For now, it will become the new garage poster for every man.
