During the opening of a new dealership in Tokyo, Lamborghini CEO, Stephen Winkelmann made a few statements concerning the Lamborghini Urus SUV Concept’s clearance for production.
“We’re working on it and it will come, which will be good for the brand.”
Very succinct, especially coming from a corporate CEO and encouraging words, indeed for potential buyers and car enthusiasts.
“We’re going low profile now. I can’t tell you much on details now, but when we get close to the launch, we will have more.”
Notice, he said “when” and not “if”. Now we await news about this dynamic looking SUV with anticipation. Bentley got the nod for production from the Volkswagen Group (which owns both Lamborghini and Bentley), had prototype SUV’s at similar stages of development last year.
Range Rover Sports, BMW X5’s/ X6’s and Porsche’s Cayenne prove that luxury SUV’S are not only profitable, but sought after by well-healed customers. Bentley and Lamborghini realize that they had both better step up their game in order to compete.
Lamborghini discontinued the LM002 SUV in 1993 after a failed effort to make military vehicles. Winkelman said, last year, that the new concept SUV could come to market in 2016 or 2017. It seems as if they could very well keep that timetable with minimal delay.
Last year, Lamborghini said it foresees annual sales of 3,000 for the SUV if it is built, with China, the United States, Europe, Russia and the Middle East as the main markets.
Unlike the oddly-styled Bentley SUV, the Urus will be a capable and attractive toy. We will keep our ear to the ground for more news.
