From concept to limited production.
In 2011 McLaren launched the McLaren Special Operations division to give current owners the ability to personalize and custom-tailor their cars. Back in May of this year, they created the MSO 650S Concept car and unveiled it in China. Thanks to the warm reception, McLaren has given the MSO 650S the green light and will be available in Coupe or Spider form.
The production MSO 650S Coupe and Spider retain much of the same design cues as the concept model that preceded them. The MSO team worked closely with McLaren Automotive Design Director, Frank Stephenson to create a powerful and exclusive design that commands attention on the road.
The new McLaren MSO 650S Coupe and Spider both feature more aggressive and dynamic carbon fiber styling cues that also work to improve overall aerodynamics. The carbon fiber pieces are all boast a satin finish and include extended MSO side blades and a three-piece rear bumper with carbon fiber center section and extended diffuser setup. This is complemented by a new set of lightweight 10-spoke alloy wheels that save 8.8 lbs. of rotating mass. The Palladium-finished alloy wheels sport diamond-cut effect inside the edge of each spoke and utilize lightweight titanium bolts to keep them secure.
The more aggressive styling of the MSO 650S Coupe and Spider is available in three different colors: ‘Papaya Spark’, ‘Agrigan Black’, and ‘Sarigan Quartz’. The ‘Papaya Spark’ gives the classic McLaren orange a modern touch while the ‘Sarigan Quartz’ is a new color that features a metallic silver finish with a light gold tint. The ‘Agrigan Black’ was featured on the original concept car and has a metallic black with deep ruby red metallic flake to alter the color depending on the angle or the light.
Inside, the MSO 650S Coupe and Spider models feature a sea of carbon black leather and alcantara. Satin-lacquered carbon fiber trim pieces are featured throughout and are contrasted by gloss-finished air vents and switchgears on the Active Dynamics Panel. On the MSO-branded carbon fiber sill panel sits an exclusive dedication plaque to show off the supercar’s exclusivity.
Making each of the 50 production McLaren MSO 650S Coupe and Spider models even more special is a sketch signed by Frank Stephenson and luxury, MSO-branded leather holdall weekend bag that are included upon delivery. The bag features handcrafted stealth black carbon fiber leather with carbon black handles and stitching with a soft alcantara lining.
The new MSO 650S made its global debut at the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed in ‘Sarigan Quartz’. Only 50 examples will be made with pricing starting at £252,500 for the Coupe and £272,500 for the Spider. Deliveries will begin at the end of 2014.
