Mercedes-Benz may be allowing us to see the passing of the torch with the AMG Vision Gran Turismo. A car designed specifically to be a physical promotion for the new Gran Turismo video game. At the SLS AMG GT Final Edition reveal, Mercedes-Benz stated that the car wouldn’t have a direct successor, but instead a new kind of sports car would emerge. AMG boss Tobias Moers only showed a slide with a single brush stroke suggesting the profile of the new sports car. Interestingly, the profile resembles that of the AMG Vision Gran Turismo concept.
Upon first impression, the AMG Vision Gran Turismo’s huge front grille (think 1952 300SL race car) with two sharply angled headlights give the appearance of a menacing deep sea creature. That’s not an insult. While it doesn’t jump right at you at first, you get the impression that this is something not to be messed with. Other notable features on the concept’s exterior include AMG ceramic high-performance brakes, and eight – count ’em, eight – prominently positioned exhaust pipes. A smooth upswept tail and a slither of brake light finish off the presentation.
Red sport seats offset the black flooring inside. The instrument panel is integrated into the gullwing doors. Above the steering wheel is a floating glass surface, which displays all the important information. Jet-like rocker switches are located on the center stack and in an overhead console.
A variant of Mercedes-Benz AMG’s twin-turbo V-8 tuned to 577 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque moves this 3,053 pound aluminum space frame body — rather quickly, we assume.
With the untimely demise of the SLS and the sudden emergence of the Vision Gran Turismo Concept, one can’t help but perceive this as Mercedes’ strategy to introduce one halo car after another rather seamlessly. Not a bad strategy and certainly not a bad car.
