Two opposites for two rival teammates.
The 2014 Formula 1 season was quite memorable for Mercedes-Benz. The automaker won the 2014 constructor’s championship while drivers Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg finished first and second, respectively in the overall driver’s championship standings. In celebration, Mercedes-Benz gave both drivers the chance to design their own SL 63 AMG Roadsters, limited to just 19 examples each – one for every racetrack used during the 2014 Formula 1 season.
Hamilton and Rosberg had quite a competitive and tense relationship throughout most of the 2014 Formula 1 season, resulting in a number of on- and off the track incidents. While their relationship may have returned to normal after the season concluded, Mercedes-Benz has showcased the contrast between the two drivers with Hamilton’s SL 63 AMG Roadster World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition model aimed at athleticism and Rosberg’s designed to be elegant and stylish.
The Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster designed by Hamilton wears a powerful Designo Night Black Magno special paint finish on the entire body including door handles, side mirrors, and even wheels. This dark color is contrasted by gold-colored lettering, fins, and stripe trim on the rear bumper to emphasize muscle and power. A black tailpipe trim protrudes from the black bodywork further alluding to the sports car’s performance. Inside, black nappa leather is worn on the seats with gold-colored stitching to match the exterior. Black Designo nappa leather with gold trim is worn on the instrument panel and center console.
Rosberg’s Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster was at the opposite end of the spectrum. The entire body wears a Designo Cashmere White Magno paint while the mirrors, door handles, wheels, lettering, fins, front bumper insert, daytime running light surrounds, window trim, and rear spoiler lip are coated in a contrasting Designo Himalayas Grey. Chromed black tailpipes also add a more powerful touch to the elegant sports car. The interior of the Roadster sports a Designo Exclusive Style Leather in Titanium Grey which covers the seats, steering wheel, door beltlines, upper portion of the instrument panel, and soft-top cover. The lower part of the instrument panel wears a brighter Deep White nappa leather along with the center console and door panels, while Designo Cashmere White Magno trim pieces complement the color scheme.
Both variants of the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition models are powered by a hand-built twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter V-8 AMG engine. For the special edition cars, the engine produces 585 horsepower and 664 lb-ft. of torque, allowing for an electronically-limited top speed of 186 mph.
Only 19 examples of the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition models will be produced with each driver’s design, for a total of 38. Each of the 19 white and 19 black models are one-off vehicles. One pair of the white and black models will represent each of the 19 Formula 1 racetracks driven during the season and sport an illustration of the track hand-embroidered into the floor mats, and engraved on a center console badge and key. Also included are a Nico Rosberg or Lewis Hamilton IWC Ingenieur chronograph watch, an F1 book singed by both drivers, and an invitation to the opening race in Melbourne for the 2015 season.
The new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG Roadster World Championship 2014 Collector’s Edition models will be offered first as a pair and then as individual units. The white and black pair of vehicles is priced at 629,510 Euros while individual models will be available for 320,110 Euros.
