A new player enters the ultra-luxury drop-top game.

Mercedes-Maybach has been making waves in the ultra-luxury car market since their launch and now they’re establishing themselves in the drop-top niche with a new limited-edition player. The new Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet will be limited to just 300 examples and defines German luxury and craftsmanship.

Up until now, the British ruled the open-air, ultra-luxury game with their Rolls Royces and Bentleys. The Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet provides some stiff competition with its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show inside and out.

Based on the open-top S-Class platform, the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet features clean, sleek proportions with a coupe-like soft top and sidewall dropping line. New front and rear bumpers with brightware and chrome headlights instantly set it apart from your standard luxury convertible. The classic Maybach logos can be found on both of the front fenders as well as the rear paneling with the roof retracted. New 20-inch forged Maybach wheels with a unique turbine design create an imposing presence.

Behind those wheels sits a full AIRMATIC suspension with steplessly variable damping control for a smooth and supple ride. Propulsion for the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is provided by a 6.0-liter, twin-turbocharged V-12 engine generating 630 horsepower at 4,800 to 5,400 RPM and 738 lb-ft. of torque from 2,300 to 4,300 RPM. That’s good enough for a 4.1-second 0-62 mph acceleration time and 155 mph electronically-limited top speed.

But the real dedication to exclusive, handcrafted luxury is in the interior of the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet. Here, every little detail has been refined to provide a supple sense of success on the road. The entire cabin is hand-trimmed in leather and features “flowing lines” to create a waterfall-like design. Diamond quilting and Budapest piping add another level of detail that just oozes comfort.

Based on the customer’s wishes, each Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is individually tailored for its color and grain. The fine wood veneer that wraps around the cockpit boasts a three-dimensional look thanks to an innovative fine-milling that follows the shape of the trim. Trim elements can be optioned in design nut brown magnolia for the first time along with a range of nine interior color concepts for customers to choose from.

At the rear of the cabin in the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is a yacht-like trim element that covers the soft top when retracted. A Maybach logo is inlaid here while the Mercedes-Maybach logos are embossed in the headrests and embroidered in the front side of the seats. To further establish itself as an exclusive piece of motoring, ‘1 of 300’ lettering is proudly displayed on the steering wheel and cup holder. Each and every option available on the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cabriolet comes as standard fare on the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet as well.

While the actual vehicle is an impressive source of opulence and exclusivity, Mercedes-Maybach decided to take things up a notch with a full travel luggage set. “The Affinity” set includes two large travel bags and two lifestyle bags made from the same lather that is worn by the interior. A polished chrome ‘1 of 300’ plate is worn by each bag as well.

The final touch for the Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet is the high-quality fabric car cover that is included with each delivery. The diamond-quilted material is color-matched to the soft-top and features an embroidered Maybach logo and lettering on the front.

As part of vehicle ownership, each model comes with a special welcome package. The pack includes a nappa leather key ring in the vehicle’s color with Maybach emblem and ‘1 of 300’ lettering. A certificate signed by Chairman of Daimler AG and Head of Mercedes-Benz Cars, Dr. Deiter Zetsche, is also included.

The new Mercedes-Maybach S 650 Cabriolet made its debut at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show and will be available in global markets in the spring of 2017. Pricing is expected to start around 300,000 euros.
