Slippery speed.
Ice and snow aren’t exactly the best elements to drive in due to their slippery composition and tendencies to cause some unpredictable situations for drivers. So, if you want to showcase the capabilities of your new tire in the snow and ice, then aim for setting a new top speed record with them on ice.
In early March, Finnish tire manufacturer Nokian, teamed up with MTM – Motoren Technik Mayer to set a new top speed record on ice with a modified Audi RS 6 riding on Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tires with Finnish driver, Janne Laitinen, behind the wheel.
In a C6-generation Audi RS 6 sedan with its 5.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-10 engine that was pumped up to over 800 horsepower by MTM, the team set out to achieve a new world record. The German company had already achieved a run of 362.5 km/h at the Nardo test track with an RS 6 and brought that experience to the frozen waters in the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland. The Audi RS 6 was modified with new aerodynamics and given enclosed, milled wheels fitted with Nokian Hakkapeliitta 8 studded tires.
With Laitinen behind the wheel, the Audi RS 6 was able to achieve two runs with an average speed of 335.713 km/h / 208.602 mph, setting a new world record.
