The Volkswagen Golf R currently holds the title of being the most potent performance-oriented model in the Golf lineup, that is until the Golf R 400 Concept is put into production. But for now, the Golf R rules the roost and thanks to MTM – Motoren Technik Mayer, it’s an even better performer on the track.
The turbocharged, 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive powertrain provides the perfect starting point for tuners like MTM to work their magic. All the potential and grip they’ll need is right on tap in the Golf R. Here, MTM engineers installed their M-Cantronic module in about 90 minutes for 2,055 Euros. The tuning module does not affect engine reliability and fuel consumption can be reduced by 5- to 20-percent, all while increasing power to 360 horsepower and 332 lb-ft. of torque. This power is on display thank to four new tailpipes.
The other important aspect of the Volkswagen Golf R that MTM focused on was the chassis. Here they wanted add some dynamics while also adding a touch of style. MTM started out by replacing the front brakes with new Brembo eight-piston calipers clenching down on 380 x 34 mm discs with stainless steel lines to ensure maximum stopping power. The rear brakes were kept stock as no upgrade was necessary. The factory wheel and tire setup was also removed and replaced with a set of MTM Nardo Edition wheels measuring 8.5 x 19 with 235/35 ZR19 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup tires for even more grip.
MTM is currently selling the entire Volkswagen Golf R with all the aforementioned upgrades for 54,875 Euros. In addition, customers can also add in a new set of sport lowering springs or coilovers, wheel spacers, and custom carpeting for the complete hot hatch package.
