A golf-inspired BMW Z4.
Golf is a game of precision, mechanics, and details – all principals used in the development and design of automobiles. The team at MWDesign gained inspiration for their latest BMW Z4 project from the Slingshot series of golf clubs from Nike with their modern design and lime green color. Along with the bold design concept, the team also enhanced the Z4’s performance and handling with numerous upgrades.
The biggest challenge the team faced was to use the bold lime green color without creating an overly extravagant and gaudy appearance. To solve this, MWDesign used a palette ranging from black, gunmetal grey, battleship grey, and white to match the lime green and allow it to be prominent. To visually tie in the exterior of the Z4 3.5 “Slingshot,” the team utilized their “CONCEPTuning” approach, which digitally renders the car and allows for precise tailoring.
For the exterior of the Z4 3.5 “Slingshot,” MWDesign sought a minimalist modern technical appearance, while still paying tribute to the Slingshot series golf clubs. The front features an AC Schnitzer polyurethane front lip with a custom carbon fiber splitter and OEM BMW Performance front kidney grilles. Running from the front to the rear is a matte carbon fiber fin with battleship grey pinstripe by Blitzgear in Richmond BC designed to highlight the lines and features of the hood, hardtop, and rear trunklid. The rear sports a spoiler lip and diffuser in carbon fiber from 3DDesign. The signature lime green is used to accentuate the roll bars and plexi wind deflector, front bumper air ducts, and rear diffuser.
Complementing the modern exterior is a set of Modulare Forged H1 wheels with a unique finish. Measuring 20 x 8.5 at the front and 20 x 10 at the rear, the forged wheels feature custom tinted brushed aluminum center caps with primer grey accents, while the lips wear a gloss black finish with grey primer and lime green accents. To improve traction, the Modulare Forged H1 wheels are shod in 245/30/20 front and 285/25/20 rear Toyo Proxes T1R tires. The Z4’s handling is further enhanced with the Eibach Pro Sports Springs and adjustable H&R front and rear swaybars.
Completing the Z4 3.5 “Slingshot” is a host of power upgrades to boost the turbocharged inline-six. An easy 78 hp and 116 lb-ft of torque was squeezed out by a DINAN Stage II+ ECU upgrade, while a prototype IND Distribution/Eisenmann USA quad exhaust system was installed for a strengthened exhaust note and improved power. To extract even more power, a front mount intercooler, charge pipe, and diverter valves from Stett Performance were installed, allowing for cooler air to be fed to the engine.
The golf club-inspired Z4 3.5 “Slingshot” pays tribute to the game of golf with its precise lime green styling and technical performance. Pricing and availability for the Z4 3.5 “Slingshot” has not been released. Currently the team at MWDesign is working on developing a big brake upgrade for the project, so stay tuned!
