Remembering the Yellow Bird.

Back in 1987, Ruf Automobile shocked the world with the CTR “Yellow Bird.” The new super car blew past the competition, beating 959s and F40s with a 211 mph top speed at the Volkswagen test track, asserting it as the king of top speed at that time.

The Ruf CTR Yellow Bird was built on a narrow-bodied 3.2 Carrera chassis with an RS-spec interior and given a lightweight aluminum skin. It was powered by a 3.4-liter, twin-turbocharged flat-six that produced 469 horsepower and 408 lb-ft. of torque, rocketing the 2,580-lb. super car to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds. Zero to 100 mph came in a mere 7.8 seconds and the car was capable of traveling at speeds of over 212 mph; which it did at the famous Nardo test track when it reached 212.5 mph.

Jethro Bovingdon, Car and Driver’s European correspondent, went to Ruf’s headquarters and drove the CTR Yellow Bird along with the new CTR3 super car. Ruf Automobile is more than just a tuning company, it’s a manufacturer, taking unnumbered Porsche chassis and building them from the ground-up to make their own unique super cars for customers.

Their newest and most powerful creation currently available is the Ruf CTR3. The super car costs about $620,000 and is powered by a mid-engined 3.8-liter flat-six engine producing 750 horsepower and 700 lb-ft. of torque. It wears a carbon fiber body and utilizes a number of 911 components. The sprint to 60 mph takes only 3.2 seconds and top speed is a whopping 236 mph.
