The Porsche Boxster Spyder is Back as the Top-Model!

Porsche Boxster Spyder

A true sports car.

There was something special about the previous-generation Porsche Boxster Spyder. It was a pure sports car like the ones of the past that inspired us to go out and drive for enjoyment. There was no unnecessary equipment and it was only available with a true manual. It also paid homage to Porsche’s iconic sports cars that became legends. That same, simplistic formula for pure driving enjoyment is back with the new-generation Porsche Boxster Spyder at the New York International Auto Show.

The new Porsche Boxster Spyder has all the right stuff in all the right places to put a big grin on your face as you slice and dice corners with the top down and the flat-six howls its German symphony. This is the classic sports car driving experience achieved with low weight, an open top, and straightforward approach to performance.

The mid-mounted, 3.8-liter flat-six engine echoes with beautiful sounds thanks to the Sport exhaust system with dual centrally-mounted tailpipes. A total of 375 horsepower at 6,700 RPM and 310 lb-ft. of torque is sent to the rear wheels thanks to a six-speed manual gearbox (the only transmission available) paired with dynamic transmission mounts for even better performance. Acceleration from 0-62 mph takes only 4.5 seconds while top speed is pegged at 180 mph.

Part of what makes the Porsche Boxster Spyder such a true driver’s car is its dedication to handling and lightweight performance. The new top-model is the lightest and most powerful Boxster available. It sports a tight sports suspension that sits 20 mm lower than the standard model, a set of Porsche 911 Carrera brakes, and a more engaging steering system. Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) with mechanical rear differential ensures maximum grip and control. Stability is also boosted thanks to the new staggered wheels that measure 8.5J x 20 at the front axle and 10.5J x 20 at the rear with 235/35 ZR20 and 265/35 ZR20 tires, respectively. In total, the new high-performance model tips the scales at just 2,899 lbs. (curb weight).

The Porsche Boxster Spyder is straightforward and aerodynamic while taking design cues from previous driving legends. Both the front and rear fascias were taken from the powerful Porsche Cayman GT4 while the lightweight hand-operated folding cloth top is back to keep weight down. Behind the black top sits two bulges that extend from the headrests to the decklid and mirror those found on the Porsche 718 Spyder from the 1960s. Two black-painted bi-xenon headlights stare ahead while smoked LED taillights create a powerful contrasting look. The rear also sports a spoiler positioned between the taillights that mimics the classic ducktail look and automatically deploys at 75 mph.

Inside, the dedication to pure driving pleasure and performance is apparent. There is no radio air conditioning system. Both were scrapped in the name of weight savings, however both can be ordered as ex-factory options at no additional cost. A new pair of lightweight sport seats keeps driver and passenger firmly in place while a new 360 mm steering wheel begs drivers to take control.

The new Porsche Boxster Spyder will be available in the United States market in October of 2015 and is currently available for ordering. Pricing will start at $82,100 plus a $995 destination charge.
