The newest small SUV from Stuttgart.
For some time there have been rumors about a new, small SUV that Porsche would be introducing in the next few years and it was called the “Cajun”. Well, plans for the small SUV are still in place, but it has a different name now – the Porsche Macan, not to be confused with the Porsche Macun.
Porsche has just previewed its newest SUV that the German automaker is hoping will carry on the sales success of the Cayenne. The new name, Macan, means tiger in Indonesian, and is pronounced Mah-kahn. The name was chosen because Porsche believed it represented the characteristics of the new SUV, combining power, dynamics, and flexibility.
“The Macan combines all sports car characteristics with the benefits of a SUV and is a genuine Porsche”, said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Porsche AG. “The name of a new Porsche has to fit with the brand, sound good in very many languages and dialects and evoke positive associations.”
The new Porsche Macan will be made at a newly expanded facility in Leipzig, Germany in 2013. Porsche is currently investing 500 million Euros into the production plant, will include a new body assembly line and paint shop, and create over 1,000 new jobs.
The Porsche Macan will be the fifth model in the automaker’s lineup. Porsche has not released more information on the SUV, but we’re speculating that it will be utilize hybrid, diesel, and smaller displacement gasoline engines with forced induction.
