Where that little “S” makes a big difference.
Porsche’s Turbo models usually sit at the top of the food chain with their twin-turbocharged engines, host of standard features, and incredible performance. But then there are the few that sport that little “S” badge on their rears and it makes all the difference – just take a look at the new Cayenne 958 Turbo S.
The Turbo S models have that extra special touch of power, performance, and features that set them apart as the pinnacle of the model line. The new Cayenne 958 Turbo S is no different, offering up a wealth of standard features and performance goodies that catapulted forward by a pair of turbochargers.
Under the hood of the new Cayenne Turbo S model is a tuned version of the 4.8-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine found in the standard Cayenne Turbo. All of the same features such as VarioCam Plus, Direct Fuel Injection (DFI), charge air cooling, and Auto Start Stop function all are utilized to ensure that fuel economy is unchanged over the standard Turbo model. But enough of that, it’s all about the power! The 958 Turbo S boasts 550 horsepower at 6,000 RPM and 553 lb-ft. of torque from 2,250 to 4,500 RPM – an increase of 50 horsepower and 37 lb-ft. of torque over the standard Turbo model. All of the extra power and gobs of torque is sent through an eight-speed Tiptronic S transmission with Porsche Traction Management (PTM) to ensure maximum grip.
Performance for the SUV is inspiring as it sprints to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds and reaches a top speed of 175 mph with ease, thanks to two turbochargers forcing air into all eight cylinders.
But all of that power is worthless in a Porsche if it cannot be controlled. The new Cayenne 958 Turbo S has a wealth of driving aids and technology packed into its chassis to make it quite the corner carver. An air suspension with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) allows for continuous adjustments and is aided by Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) to improve stability using a rear differential lock and brakes, and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) to prevent any kind of body roll. Large 15.4-inch front and 14.1-inch rear brake discs with aluminum calipers help the SUV to come to a complete stop, but if customers want even more power they can opt for the Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB) set. The finishing touch for the dynamic chassis is the standard Sport Chrono Package which sharpens up performance and shows lap times and distances through a digital and analog timer.
The exterior of the SUV features a more inspiring design and that special “Turbo S” badge worn on the rear fascia. The front was given gloss black air inlets that are larger than other Cayenne variants to reflect the additional power underneath the hood. New Bi-Xenon headlights with Porsche Dynamic Lighting System (PDLS) offer cornering, speed-sensitive, and weather-dependent automatic lighting controls for better visibility and have gloss black housings to match the air inlets and side mirrors. The standard wheels for the Cayenne 958 Turbo S are 21-inch Turbo II models with a five double-spoke design and colored crests.
The interior, just as other Turbo S models, was outfitted with a wealth of luxurious features and a sport-oriented flair. Customers will be able to choose from a Black/Luxor Beige or Black/Carrera Red interior color scheme that features special leather seating; alcantara accents on the seats, dash, and headliner; and even contrasting embroidered floor mats. The standard carbon fiber package gives the dashboard trim, doors, center console, and Tiptronic S shifter interwoven fiber styling. A special “Turbo S” badge is illuminated on each of the stainless steel side sills and an individual plaque is worn on the dashboard.
Deliveries of the new Porsche Cayenne 958 Turbo S models are set to begin in January of 2013 around the world. Pricing for the powerful SUV has not been released.
