Houston, we have a burnout.
Giving back to charity and educational programs is always a good thing. The Experimental Aircraft Association youth education programs, the Young Eagles, and other youth aviation programs have benefitted from Ford’s charity auctions of one-off special-edition cars for years. In total, almost $3 million has been raised by the American automaker. The new one-off Apollo Edition Ford Mustang pays homage to the U.S. Apollo spaceflight program and will be auctioned off to raise more money for the EAA youth aviation programs including the Young Eagles.
“The Apollo program delivered astonishing innovations in technology and achieved a national goal of landing the first human on the moon,” said Edsel B. Ford II, a member of the Ford board of directors. “The entire program was extraordinary – one of our nation’s greatest technological achievements. With this year’s stunning Apollo Edition Mustang, we salute that spirit of American ingenuity with the quintessential American automobile – Ford Mustang.”
The new Apollo Edition Ford Mustang is based on the 2015 fastback Ford Mustang GT and features a Ford Performance supercharger atop the 5.0-liter V-8. The engine spits its thunder out an X-pipe with side and rear outlets. In total, the space-inspired muscle car produces 627 horsepower and 540 lb-ft. of thrust making for some entertaining, smoke-filled launches.
Performance doesn’t end there either. A Ford Performance shifter, sport-tuned suspension, beefy six-piston Brembo brakes, and custom-tailored 21-inch Forgiato wheels lend to a more athletic and dynamic driving experience.
Under the leadership of Ford Design Manager, Melvin Betancourt, the Apollo Edition Ford Mustang was given all sorts of American space program details with an eye on performance. A special one-off glossy pure white paint combines with a pure black color and various U.S.A. and N.A.S.A. decals to create a powerful aviation statement. Carbon fiber makes up the large front splitter, rear diffuser, accents, and side skirts. The latter sits above a special LED underbody lighting system that emits a dark yellow glow.
Inside, the same N.A.S.A. and Apollo space program theme for the muscle car is featured throughout the cabin. The seats, trim panels, and floor mats all bear some kind of U.S.A. space program tribute while performance gauges, and new instrument panel give drivers an exclusive feel. A special Apollo mission patch proudly sits behind the two front seats to showcase the car’s inspiration.
The new Apollo Edition Ford Mustang will be auctioned off for charity at the EAA gathering of Eagles gala on July 23rd, with all proceeds going to the youth aviation education charity.
