The 997.2 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR gets ready for the 2012 season

Back and ahead of the pack.

Porsche has been heavily involved in motorsports throughout the history of the company. The knowledge and technology gained here has trickled down into its production cars and keeps them at the forefront of the automotive industry. For the 2012 racing season, Porsche has unveiled their latest 911 GT3 RSR that features new advancements and modifications to stay ahead of the pack.

“Our customer teams can expect a technically mature, high performance race car with which they will be highly competitive at international long distance races,” assures Hartmut Kristen, Head of Porsche Motorsport. “Our test program on various international race tracks is currently running at full speed. We are very pleased with the car’s performance and drivability.”

The new Porsche 911 GT3 RSR is based on the 997.2 911 GT3 RS model and is the pinnacle of Porsche’s customer racing vehicles. The new GT3 RSR is built to conform with A.C.O. “LM” GTE regulations and features a body that is 48 mm wider than the previous model. The door sills, wheel arch coverings, nose, and rear panels are all build to accommodate the flared front and rear wheel arches. At the front of the 911 GT3 RSR are traditional air ducts and side flics for improved aerodynamics. The rear fenders have been given air inlets similar to those found on the 911 Turbo and 911 GT2 RS street cars.

Under the hood of the 911 GT3 RSR is a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that has an output of 460 horsepower with the mandatory air restrictor. The power is sent through a sequential six-speed transmission to the 310 mm wide rear wheels. Porsche has also increased the diameter of the front wheels by 30 mm, bringing them to a total of 680 mm.

The 2012 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR will meet regulations for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Le Mans Series, American Le Mans Series, FIA World Endurance Championship, International GT Open, and other series. Deliveries will begin in January of 2012, with prices starting at € 498,000 (+/- 672,500 USD) plus country-specific taxes.
