Flying under the radar.
The BMW 1-Series M Coupe has quietly come and gone, and is now a thing of the past. The team at Alpha-N Performance hasn’t given up on the small sports car and their new upgrade program makes new BMW M models look rather tame.
The focus for the Alpha-N Performance engineers was the TwinPower Turbo N54B30 inline-six cylinder engine of the 1-Series M Coupe. The team started off with the hardware aspect before turning to the software modifications to achieve their lofty power goals.
The inline-six was outfitted with a new in-house turbocharger with larger compressor and turbine wheels sitting inside of a modified housing. A Wagner Tuning EVO3 intercooler works with larger-diameter piping and a Forged blow-off valve to improve cooling and airflow. A new fuel pump, spark plugs, and coil pack were also upgraded. Backpressure was optimized thanks to a new pair of Wagner downpipes and race-spec mid pipes.
The eye-catching piece to the Alpha-N Performance BMW 1-Series M Coupe conversion is the in-house Snow Stage 3 water-methanol injection system that uses a 50-50 mix of distilled water and methanol to cool the engine’s top-end during combustion. The system utilizes a pump and 9.5-liter tank in the trunk to supply the engine with the necessary mix.
After the hardware was installed, Alpha-N Performance worked on optimizing the software of the ECU to accommodate. In the end, a total of 564 horsepower and 541 lb-ft. of torque is created by the upgraded engine, giving the BMW 1-Series M Coupe better output than many current M models.
Harnessing all of that power isn’t an easy task, so Alpha-N Performance installed a new competition-grade clutch and single-mass, stainless steel flywheel. Slicing the pavement is a new coilover suspension from tech partner, Ohlins, that can be adjusted for specific road or track situations.
Alpha-N Performance went to the BMW Performance catalog for the exterior with a new front splitter and rear spoiler lip combo that helps to generate downforce and improve stability as the 1-Series M Coupe reaches triple-digit speeds. New hard-shell sport seats and steering wheel with LED shift indicator and central window engage drivers even more.
The BMW 1-Series M Coupe may be extinct, but the team at Alpha-N Performance is ensuring it doesn’t disappear into the past without a fight.
