A drag race between two superstars.
The Bugatti Veyron has long held the title of being the fastest hypercar around. It’s incredibly high price tag, attention-to-detail, otherworldly amounts of power, and record-setting top speed put it in a league of its own. But there are newcomers to the hypercar scene and they’re ready to take the crown.
One of those is the McLaren P1 that utilizes a twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8 engine and an electric motor to produce a combined 903 bhp and 722 lb-ft. of torque. While that isn’t as much as the 987 bhp and 922 lb-ft. of torque from the quad-turbocharged W-16 of the Veyron, the P1 is significantly lighter. The Brit tips the scales at 3,075 lbs. while the Veyron plops down at a meaty 4,162 lbs.
In order to see who was fastest, a 2011 Bugatti Veyron lined up next to a 2014 McLaren P1 on an empty runway. The race was close for quite a while, but eventually, the P1 pulled away in triple-digit territory.
At the end of the race, the McLaren P1 had achieved a 176.8 mph speed while the Veyron clocked in at 172.2 mph. That’s quite a difference.
