Watch a Nissan GT-R lose its Hood at 180 MPH!

Nissan GT-R Hood Fly Off

Up, up, and away!

There’s a lot that goes into making a car that can reliably go into triple-digit speeds, aside from the engine. Aerodynamics have to be in place that can ensure that the car is stable at high speeds, properly cooled, and intact.

This video of a 1,600-horsepower Nissan GT-R drag racing a 2,100-horsepower twin-turbocharged Lamborghini Gallardo shows just how important the little things are when it comes to racing.

Nissan GT-R Hood Fly Off

Prior to the race, the driver of the GT-R tried to ensure that no air would be forced under the hood through the body panels by applying blue painter’s tape across the front end. That, however, was just not enough for the massive forces beating on the front of the GT-R as it climbed into the triple-digit range.

As the GT-R flew past the 100 mph mark, the tape began to peel and fly off of the super car. This allowed air to build beneath the hood and compromise the aerodynamics. As it hit 180 mph, the entire hood completely blew off and sailed into the air.

Luckily, nobody was hurt and the incident was caught on a variety of cameras including one that was strapped to the hood of the car.
