…and take on a Corvette Z06!
The Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is built to throw down in a straight line and even in the curves. It’s a traditional muscle car in the sense that it has a big V-8 and rear-wheel drive, but not in the fact that it’s designed to carve up corners like a true sports car.
The factory Camaro ZL1 comes packed with an LT4 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 engine putting down 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft. of torque. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is packing the same heat and the same output.
They may be different cars, but they have the same supercharged American hearts powering them to triple-digit speeds. So, John Hennessey, owner of Hennessey Performance, decided to put them in a head-to-head race to see who was faster in a straight line.
After a few runs, the Corvette turned out to be the victor, but by a narrow margin. Surprisingly, the Camaro ZL1 held its own and put up a stiff fight for the Corvette, only to lose by a small fraction of time in each run, which for the Camaro is an impressive feat.
But for those Camaro ZL1 owners that want to surpass the Corvette Z06’s performance, they can opt for a range of upgrade programs from Hennessey Performance, culminating in the HPE1000. Here, the 6.2-liter V-8 engine is given a new supercharger, forged internal parts, an upgraded fuel and cooling system, better airflow, and a full exhaust system from headers to tailpipes. After some tuning, the monster muscle car churns out a whopping 1,000 bhp at 6,300 RPM.
And that’s more than enough power to beat the Corvette Z06.
