Those damn Porsche drivers…
Nissan’s DeltaWing race car is quite a unique and interesting wedge-shaped car that’s wide in the rear but extremely narrow at the front. The concept raced its 300 bhp 1.6-liter turbo-four at the 2012 24 Hours of Le Mans but unfortunately was taken out and had to retire.
Now the team is back and competing in the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. But once again, they were involved in an accident. During testing at the race track, the Nissan DeltaWing was in the process of passing the slower Hornet Racing Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car in the GTC class. As the DeltaWing passed, the 911 Cup car hit the back side of the car, causing it to flip over and give driver, Gunnar Jeannette, a face full of asphalt, grass, and dirt before flipping right-side up and coming to a stop.
Luckily, Jeannette did not suffer injuries from the accident and the damage to the DeltaWing wasn’t bad enough to keep it from racing at Petit Le Mans. But, we hope that this bout of bad luck doesn’t follow it to race day.
