Who needs the V-10 when you have a twin-turbocharged V-8?
When the Audi R8 was first introduced, the 4.2-liter V-8 engine was all the rage because it was the only engine offered. Then came the V-10 along with other performance-oriented variants, followed by the recent facelift and its power bumps. That left the original Audi R8 powered by the stout 4.2-liter V-8 at the bottom of the performance totem pole. XXX-Performance and Chiptrick teamed up to make this the model to have with their new twin-turbocharger upgrade.
The 4.2-liter FSI naturally-aspirated engine is no doubt impressive, but has lost ground in the supercar game in stock form. So XXX-Performance and Chiptrick put their skills together to create a high-performance engine upgrade that put the V-10s of the other R8s to shame. The Chiptrick team developed their own twin-turbocharger system with modified Garrett turbochargers, custom-designed intercooler system, and high-pressure fuel pump system with more efficient nozzles. For a touch of style, the cooling system covers can be ordered in red, black, or carbon fiber. The team also designed their own exhaust system with X-pipe and valve control system that can be operated by the driver. Audi R8s equipped with the S-Tronic transmission also benefit from a new transmission tune for even better performance.
The new XXX-Performance and Chiptrick twin-turbocharged upgrade can be had in three different stages with performance that easily bests that of the other Audi R8 models. In stage one, the 4.2-liter lays down an impressive 590 horsepower and 478 lb-ft. of torque. In stage two, power climbs up to 640 horsepower and 498 lb-ft. of torque. Stage three has the most impressive figures as the mighty 4.2-liter V-8 sends out a whopping 707 horsepower and 597 lb-ft. of torque, rocketing the R8 to 62 mph in just 3.6 seconds – a full second faster than the stock model. Acceleration is impressive at any speed; 124 mph comes in just 10.6 seconds and 186 mph is hit in just 26.4 seconds while top speed is limited to 195 mph.
Styling was also part of the upgrade process because you can’t go fast without looking good. XXX-Performance and Chiptrick gave the boosted Audi R8 a new set of deep-dish Oxigin Oxrock wheels that measure 8.5 x 20 up front and 11.0 x 20 at the rear with high performance 235/30R20 and 295/25R20 rubber clawing at the road. The new stance can be complemented by a set of carbon fiber side blades, front spoiler flaps, and functional rear fins.
The team at XXX-Performance and Chiptrick made sure that all three stages of tuning for the twin-turbocharged Audi R8 4.2 could be used for daily driving duties for customers. In addition to the 4.2-liter V-8, the team also offers twin-turbocharger kits for the 5.2-liter engines of the Audi R8 and Lamborghini Gallardo that can produce up to 1,200 horsepower.
